Vijayanandsuri gained fame as the first monk in modern times to earn the title "Acharya".
He travelled on foot throughout Gujarat and the Punjab, working to open Jain Bhandaras (libraries), which were not readily accessible to the public. Through his efforts a number of ancient Jain manuscripts were brought to light and copied for distribution. This earned him the attention of Western scholars, who invited him to attend the 1893 World Parliament of Religions in Chicago. Although he declined to participate, he sent Virchand Gandhi as his deputy & rest is history.
Smadhi of Acharya Atma Ram Ji located in historical city of Gujranwala. Acharya Atma Ram Ji was born in 6 April 1837 at Lahara district Ferizpur(Indian Punjab). Acharyanand Suri also known as Atmaramji of Gujranwala, was the first Swetambar Murtipujaka Jain monk in modern times to receive the title of Acharya. Born and raised in Punjab, he was initiated as Sthanakvasi monk who later joined Murtipujaka tradition. He travelled extensively in Gujarat, Rajputana and Punjab; and organised and reformed Jain community, ascetic orders and literature. He wrote several books in Hindi and was invited to the first World Parliament of Religions in 1893 which was attended by Virchand Gandhi later. Acharya Atma Ram Ji was died in 20 May 1896 at the age of 59 and this splendid Smadhi constructed in memory of Acharya Atma Ram Ji. This historical and splendid architecture need to renovation and preservation soon..
